Gear Coupling Installation and Alignment Checklist
Step-by-step checklist for gear coupling installation and shaft alignment.
Proper installation and alignment are critical for gear coupling performance and longevity. This comprehensive checklist ensures correct procedures are followed every time.
Pre-Installation Checklist
Equipment Verification
- Verify coupling model matches specification
- Confirm bore sizes match shafts
- Check keyway dimensions
- Inspect coupling for shipping damage
- Verify all components are present
Shaft Preparation
- Clean shaft surfaces thoroughly
- Remove burrs and nicks
- Verify shaft dimensions within tolerance
- Check keyway dimensions
- Apply light oil film to shaft
Tool Preparation
- Heat source for hot mounting (if required)
- Temperature measuring device
- Alignment tools (dial indicators/laser)
- Torque wrench for fasteners
- Grease and filling equipment
Hub Installation
Interference Fit (Hot Mounting)
Calculate heating temperature
- Temperature rise = (Interference × 1000) / (Bore × α)
- Typically 80-120°C above ambient
Heat hub uniformly
- Use oven or induction heater
- Never use open flame on bore
- Verify temperature reached
Mount quickly
- Position hub immediately
- Slide to correct axial position
- Insert key before cooling
- Hold in position until cooled
Verify mounting
- Check axial position
- Confirm key properly seated
- Allow to cool completely
Clearance Fit (Cold Mounting)
- Apply retaining compound (if specified)
- Slide hub onto shaft
- Position axially per drawing
- Secure with setscrew or lock nut
- Tighten to specified torque
Alignment Procedure
Rough Alignment
- Position equipment approximately aligned
- Install soft foot (shim motor feet)
- Achieve rough alignment visually
- Secure equipment loosely
Final Alignment
Angular Alignment
- Mount dial indicator on hub face
- Measure TIR at multiple points
- Calculate angular deviation
- Adjust to within specification
| Coupling Speed | Angular Tolerance |
|---|---|
| <1500 RPM | 0.5° per mesh |
| 1500-3000 RPM | 0.3° per mesh |
| >3000 RPM | 0.2° per mesh |
Offset Alignment
- Mount dial indicator on hub OD
- Measure TIR through one revolution
- Calculate offset
- Adjust to within specification
| Coupling Speed | Offset Tolerance |
|---|---|
| <1500 RPM | 50% of max rated |
| 1500-3000 RPM | 30% of max rated |
| >3000 RPM | 20% of max rated |
Axial Gap Setting
- Measure gap between hub faces
- Compare to specification
- Adjust motor/driven position if needed
- Re-verify alignment after adjustment
Sleeve Assembly
Full Gear Coupling
- Separate sleeve halves (if split)
- Engage teeth carefully - avoid forcing
- Center sleeve axially
- Install and torque bolts in star pattern
- Verify free rotation
Half Gear Coupling
- Position sleeve on gear hub
- Align bolt holes with flange
- Install and torque bolts
- Check for binding
Lubrication
Initial Fill
- Use specified grease grade
- Fill to 50-60% of void volume
- Ensure grease reaches all teeth
- Wipe excess from seals
Grease Quantity Guide
| Coupling Size | Approximate Fill |
|---|---|
| Small (<150mm OD) | 200-500g |
| Medium (150-300mm) | 500-1500g |
| Large (>300mm) | 1500-5000g |
Final Checks
Before Startup
- All fasteners properly torqued
- Guards installed correctly
- Oil cups or grease fittings accessible
- Free rotation by hand
- Recording baseline readings
Initial Startup
- Run without load briefly
- Monitor for noise, vibration, temperature
- Check for leakage
- Record readings for future reference
After Thermal Stabilization
- Re-check alignment after warm-up
- Verify temperatures normal
- Record hot alignment readings
- Document all installation data
Common Installation Errors
| Error | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Cold installation of interference fit | Hub cracks, slips | Always heat properly |
| Misaligned shafts | Rapid wear, vibration | Use proper alignment tools |
| Wrong grease quantity | Overheating or leaks | Follow specifications |
| Missing alignment check | Reduced life | Always verify alignment |
