The most common reason a coupling arrives correctly and still fails early is that it was packed with whatever grease was on the shelf. Ordinary bearing grease separates under centrifugal force, and a coupling is a centrifuge. We can supply coupling grease with the order so the right product is in the box, not sourced separately at fitting time.

Tell us the coupling size, the speed, the duty and the ambient conditions and we will specify the grade and the initial fill quantity. For unusual conditions — high ambient, food contact, very low temperature — say so, because the grade changes. Frequently asked questions

Can I use ordinary bearing grease in a gear coupling?

No. A coupling rotates, and centrifugal force separates ordinary grease into oil and thickener — the oil migrates out and a dry soap cake stays on the teeth. Coupling greases are formulated with high viscosity base oil and resistance to centrifugal separation specifically to prevent this.

How do I tell whether the grease interval is right?

Look at what comes out. Grease still soft, evenly coloured and free of metal means the interval is fine or could be extended. Grease that is dry, separated into oil and solids, grey, or gritty means the interval is too long or the seals are letting contamination in.

What does metal in the grease mean?

Tooth or bearing wear is underway. A trace of fine dark material can be normal bedding-in on a new coupling, but visible particles or a magnetic smear mean investigate now. It is an early warning that typically gives weeks of notice before a failure becomes a breakdown.
