Gear Coupling Torque Calculator

This gear coupling torque calculator uses T (Nm) = 9,550 × P (kW) ÷ N (rpm), then multiplies by your service factor for the design torque. A 15 kW motor at 1,440 rpm gives about 99 Nm, or 149 Nm at service factor 1.5. Choose a coupling rated above the design torque; SMI's FG-100 to FG-119 sizes cover 559 to 1,666,744 Nm.

Typical service factors: about 1.0 for uniform loads such as fans and pumps, 1.5 for conveyors and mixers, and 2.0–2.5 for crushers, mills and reciprocating drives.

How to size a gear coupling

  • Find nominal torque from motor kW and RPM.
  • Multiply by the service factor for your load type.
  • Choose a coupling rated above the resulting design torque.
  • Confirm bore, RPM limit and misalignment with SMI engineers.
