What an HRC coupling is, and where the name comes from
HRC is a size series, not a brand. An HRC coupling is a jaw-type flexible coupling: two cast iron hubs with jaws, a flexible element between them, and — in the common taper-bush form — a taper bush in each hub to grip the shaft. It is the workhorse of general industrial drives in India: pumps, fans, blowers, small conveyors and compressors.
Its appeal is practical rather than technical. It is inexpensive, it fits and comes off in minutes with a taper bush, the element is a stocked consumable, and there is nothing to lubricate.
Reading the size series
The series runs HRC 070, 090, 110, 130, 150, 180 and 230. Each step defines a torque capacity and a bore range. Two rules to apply when selecting:
- Select on service-factored torque, not motor kW. Calculate T = 9,550 × kW ÷ RPM at the coupling, then multiply by the duty factor — roughly 1.0 to 1.25 for smooth centrifugal loads, 1.5 for compressors and conveyors, higher for anything that starts under load or reverses.
- Then check the bore range. If your shaft sits at the very top of a size's bore range, the hub wall left behind is thin. Move up one size rather than machining to the maximum.

Tightening the screws draws the taper in, contracting the split sleeve onto the shaft for a genuine interference grip. - One hub size accepts one bush size, but that bush is available in many bores. That is the whole point — you can standardise on one coupling and stock several bushes for different shaft sizes.

- Align properly. The element forgives residual error; it does not replace alignment. Misalignment is absorbed by the element flexing every revolution, which heats it internally.
